So. Much. Pizza.

After two days of reading through Yelp and other review aggregators, checking websites and Facebook pages, and trying to determine who is actually still open post pandemic, I've come up with a list of 46 independent pizza places in Westmoreland County. I was aiming for a nice, round 50, but this gives me some leeway to add any new places as they spring up.

There are certainly others, but since we eat there regularly I don't plan to include them in the blog (Ianni's, Pizza Sienna, and Warrior Pizza are but a few).

They're grouped here by location. The plan is to visit all the dine-in places during colder weather, and save the carryout-only restaurants for warmer weather when we can take a pizza to a nearby park so that it's still hot and fresh when we eat it.

We had a pizza visit planned for the weekend, but wanted to first take advantage of the return of a popular fish fry on Friday night. The Claridge Volunteer Fire Department cancelled its fish fry in 2022 because of supply chain issues, but in prior years it consistently showed up on Top Ten fish fry lists for Westmoreland County so we were excited to see it back. The fish fry is held at Colton Hall, a banquet facility in the small town of Claridge, PA (population around 600). Because of the past positive press, the fish fry draws folks from all over the county and the Pittsburgh metro region in general.  We arrived at about 5:25 and were happy to see that the line was, while out the door, fairly short. Claridge has its order takers sit right inside the door. You order, pay, get a number, and then go inside to get drinks, grab a seat, and wait. Fish Fry Interlude - North Irwin VFC, March 3, 2023

Last Friday, Chip and I attended one of our favorite fish fries which had been cancelled in both 2021 and 2022: the North Irwin VFC. We didn't know until last week whether they planned to hold a fish fry this year, so there was some minor celebrating going on once we heard the affirmative. Pennsylvania has a convoluted system of boroughs, municipalities, townships, and cities, with similarly convoluted levels of government bureaucracy. I won't spend any time on that soapbox, other than to say North Irwin is a PA borough with a population of only 846 but its own governing council, tax structure, and volunteer fire company. It's a charming "town" on a hill with several streets of well-maintained older frame houses. At the end of one residential block sits the VFD. Louisville Food: Two Pizzas and a Fish

It's been a hot minute since I've posted! The last two weeks of May were filled with work stuff and preparation for our trip to Louisville, so we didn't try any new pizza joints. Then we were in Louisville from June 3 to June 17, so I thought I'd write about my pizza (and fish) dining experiences there.  Louisville consistently ranks among the top 10 foodie cities on several food-oriented lists. There are a high number of restaurants per capita (I can't find a definitive number, but I did see a recent list that said Louisville had more than 2,500). But when I head back home for a visit, I'm looking for local comfort food.
